The Bamboo
Gucci's artisans invented a method of sweating and bending bamboo cane (which could still be imported from Japan) to produce sturdy, rigid handbag handles at the end of the war, when supplies were still in short supply.
The first-ever Gucci bamboo-handle bag was introduced in 1947. It was an immediate hit, with celebrities such as Ingrid Bergman, Elizabeth Taylor, and, later, Princess Diana wearing it.
The Soho Disco
The Soho Disco, with its central emblem, swinging tassel, and cross-body strap, was a gateway Gucci jewel, marking Gucci's foray into covetable entry-level bags. The silhouette is designed to sit conveniently over the hips while remaining deceptively roomy, making it a reliable desk-to-dinner choice. The Soho Disco is still one of Gucci's most famous bags today.
The Dionysus
No one could have imagined the all-encompassing impact his penchant for retro kitsch and artisanal imagination will have on the fashion industry environment when Alessandro Michele, the brand's longtime head jewelry designer, was announced as Frida Giannini's replacement in 2015.
Michele soon established himself as one of the most prominent voices in fashion by launching a series of immediately covetable bags, each one bursting with drama.
The Dionysus is a standout, with an antique metal clasp topped with two tiger heads, a tribute to its namesake deity, who rode a chariot backed by big cats.
